Here is what we have been working on in Second Grade

Our Word of the Day Vocabulary

Everyday we learn a new word. Here are the words from the last three weeks, ask your child to explain what the word means to reinforce the definitions: odor, legible, sprint, capable, logical, genius, pounce, cherish, numerous, wary, delicate, doubt, hunch, vocabulary, oval, realistic and wavy.

Language Arts

We write daily in our journals.

Last week we began working on reading poems with personality and enthusiasum.  Next week the children will be reading some of their personal favorites at our Lower School Assembly.

We have been working on a strategy to use when the children come upon a word they do not know when reading.  The children have bookmarks to remind them of this strategy.

The class is well into our SRA Short Story Reading Laboratory, which provides individual skill instruction and allows each child to move at their own pace according to individual ability.  The children have completed many different stages and are hopefully bringing their work home to showcase.

Math

Last week we began our money unit.  The children are learning how to count using quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies.  This is also good practice when trying to count by 5's and 10's.
